Oisin Murphy rode his 200th British winner of 2024 at Goodwood on Sunday. He was aboard Qetaifan in the William Hill/British EBF Restricted Novice Stakes.

What happened?

Murphy survived a stewards’ enquiry to secure the win, with the stewards satisfied the interference had no impact on the result.

He had been waiting for this milestone, having not had any winners over the last two days at Newmarket. Murphy told Racing TV he was delighted to get there eventually.

Why it matters for Oisin Murphy

This win brings Murphy closer to being crowned Flat champion jockey for a fourth time, with the Irishman well clear of Rossa Ryan in the competition.

Murphy's previous yearly best was 220 winners in 2019. He will shortly be crowned champion, with the competition concluding at Ascot on Saturday.

What comes next?

Murphy has high-profile international engagements on the horizon, including the Breeders' Cup. He hopes to record as many victories as he can before jetting off.

He brought up a double on the card and winner number 201 when Castle Gates won the Goodwood Racehorse Owners Group EBF Novice Stakes by a comfortable 10 lengths. Murphy aims for a healthy strike-rate, feeling it's better than 20 per cent if he's taking a large number of rides.

The focus is now on the remaining races before the Breeders' Cup, with Murphy looking to add to his tally of 200 British winners in 2024. He will be in action again soon, looking to continue his successful run.
